Pune: Passenger safety at Pune Railway Station has received a technological upgrade with the deployment of 160 artificial intelligence-enabled surveillance cameras capable of facial recognition, crowd monitoring and automated threat detection. The initiative strengthens security at one of Maharashtra’s busiest transport hubs while highlighting the growing role of digital infrastructure in managing high-footfall public spaces.
The newly installed AI CCTV cameras have been integrated into the station’s surveillance network, significantly enhancing monitoring capabilities across entry points, foot overbridges and other passenger movement areas. Pune Railway Station handles more than 150,000 passengers daily and has witnessed increasing commuter volumes following improved connectivity with the city’s Metro network, making advanced surveillance an important element of transport management. The upgraded system combines artificial intelligence with high-resolution imaging to detect unusual activity in real time. Officials indicate that selected cameras operate in ultra-high-definition 4K resolution and include night vision capabilities, allowing continuous monitoring under varying lighting conditions. Facial recognition technology has also been incorporated to assist security agencies in identifying individuals of interest through an integrated database. The AI CCTV cameras are designed to generate automatic alerts for the Railway Protection Force (RPF) whenever predefined security parameters are triggered. This includes identifying persons linked to existing watchlists, detecting suspicious movements and supporting the search for missing individuals after photographs are uploaded into the monitoring platform. Automated notifications are expected to improve response times during emergencies by reducing dependence on manual surveillance alone.
Another important feature of the system is crowd analytics. The technology can assess passenger density on foot overbridges and other critical locations, issuing alerts if congestion approaches unsafe levels. Urban mobility experts note that such predictive monitoring is increasingly valuable for major railway stations where overcrowding during peak travel periods can pose operational and safety risks. Pune Railway Station now operates a combined surveillance network of 235 cameras, including the newly commissioned smart devices alongside older installations. Authorities plan to phase out the remaining legacy cameras over the coming months, completing the transition to a more advanced digital surveillance framework capable of supporting integrated transport security. Transport planners view intelligent surveillance as part of a broader smart mobility strategy rather than a standalone security measure. AI-enabled monitoring can support crowd management, improve emergency coordination and optimise station operations, particularly as multimodal transport hubs continue to experience rising passenger volumes. The integration of rail, Metro and city transport services has further increased the need for real-time situational awareness across interconnected public infrastructure.
Experts also emphasise that the long-term effectiveness of intelligent surveillance depends on responsible governance, regular system maintenance and robust data protection measures.
