The deployment of 160 AI-powered cameras is expected to strengthen security monitoring, improve crowd management and enable faster emergency response at one of Maharashtra’s busiest transport hubs, where more than 150,000 passengers travel daily.
The AI surveillance at Pune Railway Station initiative integrates facial recognition capabilities, intelligent video analytics and automated alerts to assist Railway Protection Force personnel in identifying potential security risks. Officials believe the upgraded system will improve situational awareness while allowing security teams to respond more quickly to suspicious activities without disrupting passenger movement. Among the newly installed equipment, several cameras operate with ultra-high-definition 4K resolution, enabling clearer visual identification across platforms, foot overbridges, entrances and waiting areas. The surveillance network has also been connected to a database containing records of individuals linked to railway-related offences. If a person matching stored records enters the monitored zone, the system can automatically generate an alert for security personnel to verify the situation. The technology is also designed to support humanitarian functions beyond crime prevention. Railway authorities have incorporated features that can assist in locating missing persons when their details are uploaded into the system. In addition, AI-based crowd analytics can detect unusual congestion levels on footbridges or platforms, allowing officials to intervene before overcrowding creates safety concerns, particularly during festival periods, peak travel hours or emergency situations.
