Pune Rail Route Gradually Reopens After Landslide Crisis

Pune’s transport network began returning to normal on Wednesday after emergency restoration work reopened sections of the Mumbai–Pune rail corridor and the Expressway Missing Link following rain-triggered landslides. While limited rail services resumed, authorities remain on alert as continued heavy rainfall and unstable hill slopes continue to threaten one of western India’s busiest transport corridors.

The disruption followed intense monsoon rainfall across the Khandala ghat region earlier this week, where multiple landslides deposited rock, soil and debris across railway tracks, forcing a complete suspension of train operations for nearly three days. The incident also affected the recently developed Missing Link section of the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, temporarily severing a critical road connection between the two metropolitan regions. Railway engineering teams worked continuously under challenging weather conditions to remove debris and inspect track infrastructure before restoring operations on one of the affected rail lines. Initial services departing from Mumbai towards Pune included key intercity trains, offering relief to thousands of passengers whose journeys had been cancelled, diverted or significantly delayed during the disruption. Officials, however, indicated that restoration remains a phased exercise. Fresh slope failures were reported near Khandala railway station on Wednesday morning, highlighting the persistent geological risks associated with prolonged rainfall in the Western Ghats. Continuous monitoring of vulnerable locations is expected until weather conditions stabilise.

On the road network, authorities succeeded in clearing the landslide that struck the Expressway Missing Link near one of the tunnel approaches. Heavy machinery, engineering personnel and traffic management teams were deployed to remove large volumes of rock, reinforced concrete and loose debris that had blocked the carriageway. Traffic movement was restored in stages after extensive safety inspections, although some lanes continue to remain closed as a precaution against further slope instability. The Mumbai Pune rail corridor plays a crucial role in connecting Maharashtra’s commercial, industrial and logistics centres. Extended closures not only disrupt passenger mobility but also affect freight movement, business travel and regional economic activity. Urban planners increasingly view such recurring monsoon disruptions as evidence that climate adaptation must become a core element of transport infrastructure planning rather than a seasonal response.

Experts note that while engineering interventions can restore connectivity quickly, long-term resilience requires continuous slope stabilisation, advanced rainfall monitoring, improved drainage systems and early-warning mechanisms across vulnerable mountain corridors. With climate scientists projecting more frequent episodes of intense rainfall, infrastructure managers face growing pressure to strengthen assets against extreme weather events. For commuters, the immediate focus remains on the gradual restoration of normal rail and road services. Authorities continue to monitor rainfall, inspect infrastructure and regulate traffic where necessary to minimise risks while ensuring safe movement through one of Maharashtra’s most strategically important transport links.
