The newly opened Pune–Mumbai Expressway connecting link is set for tighter traffic enforcement, with authorities planning speed-monitoring cameras inside its four tunnels. The move follows concerns over motorists travelling faster on the shorter route and comes alongside stricter checks on heavy vehicles that are currently barred from the new corridor. The measures underline a broader challenge: faster infrastructure must also deliver safer and more disciplined mobility. The 13.3-km Pune Mumbai Expressway connecting link bypasses the congested Lonavala–Khandala ghat section and is designed to reduce the journey between the two cities by roughly 30 minutes. It includes major tunnels, bridges and an access-controlled alignment through difficult Western Ghats terrain.
The proposed cameras will focus on vehicle speeds inside the tunnels, allowing enforcement teams to identify vehicles exceeding the prescribed limits. The current limits are 100 kmph for light motor vehicles and 80 kmph for buses and heavy vehicles within the tunnel and bridge sections. The corridor already operates with extensive surveillance and dedicated emergency-response infrastructure. The emphasis on speed control reflects the design of the new route. Removing steep gradients, sharp curves and congestion from the old ghat section can make journeys quicker, but improved road geometry can also encourage motorists to drive faster than conditions safely permit. Highway authorities therefore need enforcement systems that work continuously rather than relying only on police presence.
Heavy-vehicle movement is another issue. The new corridor initially restricted heavy goods vehicles and vehicles carrying hazardous material, with the existing ghat route continuing to handle such traffic. The restrictions were introduced partly because heavy vehicles were associated with congestion and accident risks on the older alignment. ( The need for vigilance has become more pronounced after the corridor experienced a major monsoon-related disruption in July. A landslide near Tunnel 2 forced the Pune-bound section to close for around 18 hours before traffic was progressively restored following safety inspections. That episode adds another dimension to the safety conversation. The corridor passes through environmentally sensitive and geologically challenging terrain, making slope stability, drainage, emergency response and weather monitoring as important as speed enforcement. Climate resilience will increasingly depend on designing roads for extreme rainfall rather than treating disruption as an exceptional event. The Pune Mumbai Expressway is expected to carry substantial traffic as travel demand between Maharashtra’s two major economic centres grows. Authorities have already identified the need to expand capacity on the wider expressway network as traffic increases.
The immediate priority is therefore to combine enforcement with reliable infrastructure management. Speed cameras, controlled access, heavy-vehicle restrictions, weather surveillance and rapid incident response will determine whether the new connection delivers its promised time savings without transferring risk from congestion to high-speed travel.
