Pune Metro services on the Pimpri-Chinchwad–Swargate corridor were disrupted for about 30 minutes on Sunday afternoon after a power supply failure affected trains and station systems, including lifts, escalators and ticketing equipment.
The outage began at 12:25 p.m. on September 6 after the electricity supply feeding the Pimpri-Chinchwad and Range Hills receiving stations was interrupted. MahaMetro said eight trains operating on Pune Metro’s Line 1 were held at platforms as a safety measure, preventing them from being stranded inside tunnels or on the route.
The power failure also affected station lighting, escalators, lifts and ticketing systems along the corridor. The metro control room began issuing repeated announcements to passengers at stations about the delay, while staff kept the trains at their existing platforms until an alternative power arrangement was activated.
MahaMetro’s technical team restored traction power for the trains through an alternative arrangement from the Vanaz substation at 12:47 p.m. The eight trains were then released from the platforms. Power required for station facilities was restored at 1:06 p.m., according to the metro operator.
The main electricity supply from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited to the Range Hills substation was restored at 1:50 p.m. MahaMetro said services on the Pimpri-Chinchwad–Swargate corridor were subsequently operating normally.
The disruption led to delays and crowding at some stations as passengers waited for services to resume. Loksatta also reported complaints about congestion near escalators after a crowded train arrived at Mandai station when operations restarted. Those passenger accounts were not independently verified in the supplied report.
MahaMetro apologised for the inconvenience caused to passengers. The operator said the decision to hold the trains at platforms was taken to maintain passenger safety while the technical team worked to restore power and normal operations.
