Pune Metro Line Three Gains Operational Approval

Pune: Metro connectivity between the city centre and the western technology corridor has advanced significantly after regulatory clearance was granted for passenger operations on a major section of Pune Metro Line 3. The approval marks an important stage in expanding high-capacity public transport, offering a cleaner alternative to road-based commuting while supporting more sustainable urban mobility across one of Pune’s fastest-growing employment zones.

The latest clearance applies to the elevated stretch extending from Maan to the RK Laxman Museum station in Balewadi, covering around 13 kilometres and 12 stations. Following detailed safety assessments and technical verification, the corridor has been authorised for metro services operating at speeds of up to 80 kmph. The decision follows a series of inspections designed to ensure that all statutory, operational and engineering requirements were fulfilled before commercial services begin. The Pune Metro Line 3 project is expected to transform daily travel patterns between Hinjewadi’s information technology district and central Pune. The corridor has long been viewed as a critical transport intervention for an area that experiences severe congestion during peak office hours, resulting in longer travel times, higher fuel consumption and increasing environmental pressures. Regulatory inspections evaluated multiple aspects of the project, including structural integrity, signalling systems, telecommunications infrastructure, rolling stock readiness and track safety. Authorities also reviewed mandatory approvals linked to emergency response systems, fire safety arrangements and communication networks before permitting operations. Trial runs conducted across the corridor further demonstrated operational preparedness under prescribed safety standards.

Urban mobility specialists believe the corridor’s readiness reflects the growing emphasis on integrating transport infrastructure with expanding economic districts. As employment hubs continue to attract investment and residential growth, dependable mass transit becomes essential for maintaining productivity while reducing dependence on private vehicles. The Pune Metro Line 3 corridor is expected to improve accessibility for thousands of commuters travelling between residential neighbourhoods and major commercial centres each day.
