Pune Metro expansion moved into a new phase on November 3, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurating a new section and taking part in the foundation-laying ceremony for additional corridors that are expected to expand the city’s metro network to around 100 kilometres.
The programme, held ahead of Diwali, combined the inauguration of the latest phase with the foundation stone ceremony for further expansion. According to the report by Pudhari – Pune, Union Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol said Pune residents would eventually be able to travel across about 55 kilometres of operational or newly available metro routes, while the corridors receiving approval and foundation work would add another 46 kilometres.
Mohol said the expanded network would take Pune Metro to approximately 100 kilometres. He also said a further 50-kilometre expansion was being planned after that stage, although details of the additional corridors, construction schedules and commissioning timelines were not provided in the report.
Speaking at the event, Modi described Pune’s development as important not only for the city but also for the wider national development agenda. He said the expansion of metro infrastructure was giving a new direction to Pune’s growth. The Prime Minister also argued that India’s metro network had expanded rapidly in recent years, stating that metro services were operating across about 1,200 kilometres in 26 cities and carrying more than one crore passengers daily.
Modi attributed the faster expansion of metro systems to the current government and said that, under an earlier government and administrative system, Pune would have had to wait several more decades for metro services. His remarks included criticism of previous governments, while the event itself focused on the inauguration and further expansion of Pune’s urban rail network.
The Prime Minister also linked urban infrastructure with employment and economic activity. He said that as cities develop, production increases and economic progress receives a boost, which can help reduce the gap created by poverty. He further said that metro projects in Maharashtra had generated employment opportunities and referred to public-private partnerships as one route for building such projects.
For Pune residents, the immediate significance of the announcement lies in the proposed increase in network coverage. The report does not identify the stations, alignments, land requirements, construction packages or completion dates for the 46-kilometre addition. Those details will be important in determining how quickly the expansion can improve connections between residential areas, employment centres and existing metro corridors.
The event also included remarks on drought conditions in Maharashtra and support for farmers. Modi said farmers were important to the development of India and that the Centre stood behind those affected by drought. These remarks formed part of the wider speech, while the metro inauguration and expansion remained the principal urban infrastructure announcements.
Pune’s first metro phase had earlier received its foundation ceremony in the presence of Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Mohol said. The latest programme therefore marks both the commissioning of a new stage and the formal start of another expansion phase. Further information on project approvals, tenders, construction milestones and opening dates will determine when the planned 100-kilometre network becomes operational.
