Pune Highway Collapse Disrupts Malshej Ghat Travel
Pune: Vehicular movement through the Malshej Ghat section of National Highway 61 has been suspended after a newly upgraded stretch of road developed major subsidence during ongoing monsoon rainfall. The Malshej Ghat Highway Closure has disrupted a critical transport corridor connecting Pune district with Kalyan and Ahilyanagar, highlighting growing concerns over infrastructure resilience in Maharashtra’s rain-prone hill regions.
Traffic restrictions were imposed after highway authorities identified structural instability along a section of the highway near Junnar in Pune district. Preliminary engineering assessments indicated that continued vehicle movement could worsen the damage and increase the risk of a larger road collapse, prompting officials to close the affected route until further safety inspections and repairs are completed. The damaged section forms part of National Highway 61, an important road corridor linking western Maharashtra with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Reports from infrastructure officials suggest that nearly 100 metres of the recently concretised carriageway suffered foundation failure after prolonged rainfall weakened the underlying soil structure. Investigations are also examining whether excavation activities on adjoining land contributed to erosion around the retaining system supporting the highway.

Motorists travelling between Pune district, Ahilyanagar, Kalyan and Mumbai have been advised to use alternative routes while restoration work is planned. The diversions are expected to increase travel distances and logistics costs, particularly for commercial transport and agricultural supply chains dependent on this strategic highway. Beyond transport, the disruption is likely to affect the regional tourism economy. Malshej Ghat remains one of Maharashtra’s most visited monsoon destinations, attracting thousands of visitors to its waterfalls, trekking trails and biodiversity-rich landscapes. The closure during the peak travel season could reduce tourist inflows, impacting hospitality businesses, roadside vendors and local service providers that rely on seasonal visitor spending. Infrastructure experts say the incident reinforces the importance of climate-resilient road engineering across the Western Ghats, where prolonged rainfall, unstable slopes and changing weather patterns increasingly threaten transport assets. Effective drainage systems, continuous slope monitoring and regular geotechnical inspections are becoming essential to maintaining safe mobility through environmentally sensitive mountain corridors.
Urban planners also note that resilient transport infrastructure is fundamental to regional economic growth and public safety. As cities expand and intercity freight movement increases, highways passing through vulnerable terrain must be designed and maintained to withstand more intense monsoon conditions while reducing disruption to commuters and businesses.
