Counting for the Pune Graduate constituency began at the Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Balewadi on Monday, with election officials first sorting ballot papers into bundles of 50 before checking their validity and moving to preference-wise counting. The first trends are expected only after 4 pm, depending on the pace of scrutiny.
The constituency covers Pune, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and Solapur districts. It recorded a turnout of 62.78%, with 2,43,611 of its 3,88,019 registered voters casting ballots. The participation rate is higher than the 58.16% turnout recorded in the 2020 election.
Officials are separating valid ballot papers from invalid ones after the initial bundling process. Since no postal ballots were cast in this election, the quota required for a candidate to win will be calculated only after the final number of valid votes is established.
The election uses a preference-based counting system. Once the valid-vote total is confirmed, officials will calculate the prescribed winning quota and begin examining the preferences marked by voters. The process means that the initial count may not immediately establish the winner, particularly in a contest with a large number of candidates.
Solapur recorded the highest turnout among the five districts at 71.42%, while Sangli reported the lowest at 55.62%. The district-level variation forms part of the overall turnout figure for the constituency, which represents graduate voters across the five-district region.
A total of 47 candidates are contesting the Graduate constituency, including 35 Independents. The number of candidates adds to the volume of ballot scrutiny and could result in votes being distributed across several contenders. Under the preference-based system, the final outcome will depend on the valid-vote tally, the winning quota and the subsequent counting of voter preferences.
The counting centre is also handling the Pune Teachers’ constituency. Officials will continue the scrutiny and bundling stages before proceeding to the next steps in the counting process. Initial indications of the Graduate constituency contest are expected later in the evening, subject to the completion of the ongoing verification and counting procedures.
