Pune Flooded Areas Face Extended Power Cuts

Pune’s western IT corridor faced widespread disruption this week as prolonged power outages affected Hinjewadi, Wakad, Ravet and neighbouring localities during heavy monsoon rainfall. The electricity interruptions, which in some areas lasted for several days, disrupted remote work, water supply systems and essential services in large housing societies, exposing the vulnerability of rapidly urbanising suburban infrastructure during extreme weather events.

The disruption came as intense rain caused waterlogging across multiple parts of the city, prompting electricity authorities to temporarily shut down feeders and transformers in flooded zones as a safety precaution. Residents across Hinjewadi, Wakad, Punawale, Kiwale, Marunji, Jambhe, Nere and Kasarsai reported extended outages that affected both households and professionals working from home. For thousands of employees in Pune’s technology hub, the outages created a practical challenge. Many companies had permitted remote work because of the weather, but unreliable electricity made it difficult to operate computers, internet routers and other essential equipment. Residents said inverter backups were often insufficient for a full workday, forcing many to suspend work until supply returned. The situation also highlighted how electricity disruptions quickly cascade into broader urban service failures. In several housing societies, water pumps stopped functioning, reducing or completely halting water supply. Non-operational lifts created additional hardship for senior citizens, people with disabilities, patients and families with young children living in high-rise buildings.

According to officials, a significant number of consumers in Wakad and nearby areas were affected after floodwaters entered electrical infrastructure. Restoration work began once water levels receded, but damaged transformers and other equipment slowed the process. Authorities said most connections had been restored, while repair teams continued work in pockets where faults persisted. Urban infrastructure experts say the episode underscores the growing need for climate-resilient utility networks in fast-growing suburban corridors. Areas such as Hinjewadi and Wakad have witnessed rapid residential and commercial expansion over the past decade, increasing dependence on uninterrupted electricity for work, mobility, water supply and digital services. However, drainage systems, power infrastructure and emergency response mechanisms have often struggled to keep pace with growth. The incident also raises broader questions about urban preparedness in an era of more intense rainfall events. Experts suggest that flood-resilient substations, underground cabling in vulnerable stretches, improved stormwater drainage and decentralised backup systems for large housing societies could help reduce disruption during future monsoons.

As restoration efforts continue, the outages serve as a reminder that modern cities depend not only on roads and buildings but also on resilient utility networks capable of withstanding climate-related shocks. For Pune’s expanding IT corridor, ensuring reliable electricity during extreme weather is increasingly becoming a critical component of urban competitiveness and liveability.
