Pune: Intense monsoon rainfall has triggered widespread landslides across Pune district, severely disrupting rail and road connectivity while forcing large-scale rescue operations in vulnerable communities. The extreme weather has exposed the growing pressure on transport infrastructure and disaster response systems as climate-driven rainfall events become increasingly frequent across western Maharashtra.

The heaviest impact was recorded in the hill sections connecting Pune and Mumbai, where continuous rainfall destabilised slopes overlooking one of India’s busiest railway corridors. Multiple landslides in the Karjat-Lonavala Ghat stretch interrupted train operations for two consecutive days, prompting railway authorities to suspend, divert and regulate several passenger services while emergency teams cleared debris from the tracks. Meteorological observations showed exceptionally high rainfall over the Lonavala region within a single day, following another spell of heavy precipitation the previous day. The sustained downpour saturated hillside terrain, increasing the likelihood of slope failures across the Western Ghats. Officials monitoring the network said vulnerable locations had been placed under continuous surveillance, allowing railway personnel to halt train movements before debris reached active tracks.

The Pune monsoon landslides also affected communities beyond the transport corridor. Across the district, slope failures, flooding and structural collapses resulted in multiple fatalities, injuries and missing persons, while hundreds of residents were evacuated from flood-prone settlements as a precaution. Emergency agencies, local administrations and disaster response teams were deployed across several talukas to restore road access, relocate affected families and monitor high-risk zones. Urban mobility experienced significant disruption as train cancellations, route diversions and service curtailments affected thousands of daily commuters and long-distance passengers travelling between Mumbai, Pune and southern India. Parts of the suburban railway network also experienced temporary suspension after heavy rainfall damaged railway embankments, delaying restoration efforts until water levels receded. Authorities mobilised additional engineering teams and labourers to accelerate repairs across the affected rail corridor despite challenging weather conditions. Simultaneously, civic agencies closed bridges, restricted movement in flood-prone locations and advised pilgrims and residents to avoid unnecessary travel until weather conditions improved. Rescue operations were also undertaken in industrial areas, villages and religious centres where rising river levels posed immediate safety concerns.

Urban planners say the Pune monsoon landslides underline the increasing vulnerability of infrastructure built through steep mountain terrain. While emergency preparedness has improved over recent years through better monitoring and early warning systems, experts believe long-term resilience will depend on slope stabilisation, climate-adaptive engineering, improved drainage management and stricter regulation of development in ecologically sensitive landscapes. Weather agencies have indicated that heavy rainfall may continue across parts of the region in the coming days, keeping emergency services on high alert. Authorities have urged residents to follow official advisories, avoid landslide-prone routes and cooperate with evacuation measures where necessary as restoration work continues across transport and civic infrastructure.
