Pune Dams Receive 1.65 TMC in 3 Days, Matching City’s Monthly Water Need

Pune’s water infrastructure received a significant replenishment as four key dams in the Khadakwasla circle accumulated 1.65 Thousand Million Cubic (TMC) feet of water over the past three days, mirroring the city’s typical monthly water requirement. This surge has elevated the collective water stock across Khadakwasla, Temghar, Panshet, and Varasgaon reservoirs to 7.4 TMC, equating to approximately 25% of their total combined capacity of 29.15 TMC.

This current storage level matches last year’s figures recorded on the same date, indicating a stable water reserve trend amidst seasonal fluctuations. Recent meteorological data reveals encouraging rainfall figures across the dam catchment areas. Khadakwasla registered 34mm of rainfall, while Temghar, Panshet, and Varasgaon received between 36mm to 40mm within a 24-hour period ending Tuesday morning. Officials from the state irrigation department attributed this rise to consistent rainfall in the region, though they anticipate further increases as the monsoon progresses. “While the current reservoir levels provide a vital buffer, it’s crucial to note that the catchments are still awaiting substantial rainfall,” remarked an irrigation department official. “Historically, July and August witness the peak of monsoon activity, typically contributing the maximum to our water reserves.” The meteorological norms for Pune’s dam catchments suggest an annual average rainfall ranging from 2,000mm to 2,500mm. Presently, areas surrounding Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar have yet to surpass the 1,000mm mark for the ongoing monsoon season. Officials remain optimistic about upcoming weather patterns, emphasizing the need for continued prudent water management by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). “Pavana and Andra, key catchment zones, received 36mm and 25mm of rainfall respectively by Tuesday morning,” reported officials, noting a slight decline in rainfall intensity towards the evening hours.

As the monsoon progresses, sustained vigilance and adaptive management will be pivotal in ensuring optimal utilization of these newfound water resources for the welfare of Pune’s residents and industries alike.
