Pune’s COEP Technological University campus saw heightened tension on Friday after members of two student organisations confronted each other over participation in a political student programme scheduled in the city. Police were deployed on campus as competing claims emerged over whether students were being pressured to attend or prevented from participating, bringing student safety and campus autonomy into focus.
The confrontation occurred a day before Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was scheduled to address students in Pune. Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) alleged that National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) workers had entered the campus and attempted to influence students’ participation in the programme. ABVP representatives claimed that a group of NSUI members confronted female students and that some students who intervened were also involved in the dispute. NSUI rejected the allegations and said its members had gone to the campus after learning that some students wanted to attend the interaction and raise concerns about pending scholarship payments. The competing accounts could not be independently established from the information available. The dispute nevertheless escalated as members of both groups raised slogans against one another, prompting senior political representatives to intervene and calm the situation.
Police presence was subsequently increased to prevent further confrontation. The deployment highlights the challenge faced by educational institutions when political mobilisation enters campuses, particularly ahead of high-profile public events. For students, the immediate concern extends beyond the political dispute. Universities are expected to provide an environment where students can participate in public discussions without intimidation or coercion. At the same time, political engagement on campuses remains part of India’s broader democratic culture. The distinction between voluntary participation and organised pressure is therefore important. The scholarship issue raised by students also points to a separate institutional concern. Delays in education-related financial support can affect students’ ability to meet tuition, accommodation, transport and other costs. For young people from lower-income households, such payments can have a direct bearing on whether they can continue their education without financial stress.
Urban planners and education experts increasingly view universities as important civic spaces within growing cities. Their campuses are not isolated from wider questions of mobility, safety, employment and public participation. Maintaining safe access becomes especially important when large political or cultural gatherings are planned nearby. The incident also comes as Pune prepares for a major student-focused public gathering. Authorities will need to ensure that security arrangements protect students and residents while allowing lawful participation. For the university, the priority will be to preserve a safe academic environment and address legitimate student concerns without allowing political confrontation to disrupt campus life.
