Pune Bengaluru Corridor Gains New Crossing Infrastructure
A major road infrastructure intervention is set to reshape mobility along the Pune–Bengaluru Highway corridor, with plans advancing for three additional underpasses in Pimpri-Chinchwad. The project is intended to improve local connectivity across one of western India’s busiest national highways, where rapid urban expansion has intensified pressure on existing transport infrastructure. The proposed structures will be developed on the NH-48 stretch passing through fast-growing residential and commercial zones, including Wakad, Tathawade, Punawale and Kiwale. The initiative comes as increasing population density, new housing developments and expanding employment centres continue to generate higher traffic volumes across the metropolitan region.
The planned Pimpri Chinchwad Underpasses are expected to address a long-standing challenge faced by residents living on either side of the highway. While NH-48 serves as a critical intercity transport corridor, it also acts as a physical barrier between neighbourhoods, often forcing local commuters to travel considerable distances to access safe crossing points. Urban mobility experts note that improving local permeability is essential for creating more connected and efficient urban environments. Infrastructure officials have initiated procurement procedures following approval of the project. The new crossings are expected to utilise construction methods designed to minimise excavation and reduce disruption to highway traffic during execution. Such approaches are increasingly favoured in dense urban corridors where maintaining traffic flow is critical to economic activity and daily commuting.
The significance of the Pimpri Chinchwad Underpasses extends beyond congestion relief. Transport planners argue that strategically located crossings can reduce unnecessary vehicle kilometres travelled on service roads and local streets, lowering fuel consumption and improving journey efficiency. Better connectivity can also strengthen access to schools, healthcare facilities, workplaces and commercial centres, supporting more inclusive urban development. The project arrives at a time when Pimpri-Chinchwad is experiencing sustained real estate and infrastructure growth. Over the past decade, several areas along the highway corridor have transformed into major residential destinations due to proximity to Pune’s information technology and industrial hubs. This growth has increased demand for road infrastructure capable of accommodating both regional and local traffic movement. Experts caution, however, that the success of such infrastructure will depend on design quality and long-term resilience. One recurring concern raised by residents relates to waterlogging in existing underpasses during periods of intense rainfall. As climate variability increases, integrating effective drainage systems and flood-management measures into transport projects is becoming an essential requirement rather than an optional feature.
Urban development specialists also emphasise the need to view road projects as part of a broader mobility ecosystem. Complementary investments in public transport, pedestrian infrastructure and traffic management systems can help maximise the benefits of new crossings while reducing dependence on private vehicles. Once completed, the underpasses are expected to improve movement for residents across multiple neighbourhoods and villages connected to the Pimpri-Chinchwad urban region.
