Pune Appeals For Quiet And Safer Palkhi Procession

Pune Municipal Corporation has appealed to devotees, religious organisations and residents to avoid using DJs and high-volume sound systems during this year’s Palkhi procession, seeking to preserve the spiritual character of the annual pilgrimage while ensuring smoother movement for lakhs of participants. The appeal forms part of wider civic preparations aimed at improving public safety, sanitation and crowd management during one of Maharashtra’s largest religious gatherings.

Municipal officials said traditional devotional music, including abhangs accompanied by taal and mridanga, should remain central to the procession rather than amplified sound systems that can disrupt communication and movement. The request follows feedback from organisers who highlighted that excessive noise often creates operational challenges for volunteers coordinating the large procession and can affect the overall experience for devotees. The Palkhi procession attracts pilgrims from across Maharashtra and passes through several parts of Pune, requiring extensive coordination between civic agencies, emergency services and volunteers. Authorities believe reducing loud music will help improve communication among organisers while maintaining the cultural and spiritual significance of the centuries-old tradition. Alongside the appeal, Pune Municipal Corporation has significantly expanded civic infrastructure to accommodate the expected influx of pilgrims. Around 2,000 temporary toilets have been installed along the procession route to improve sanitation and reduce pressure on existing public facilities. Additional cleaning teams have also been deployed to maintain hygiene standards throughout the event.

Temporary lighting arrangements have been strengthened to improve visibility during early morning and evening hours, supporting safer movement for devotees and emergency response teams. Officials noted that adequate illumination is particularly important along high-footfall stretches where large crowds gather during the pilgrimage. The civic administration has also established 195 German hangar-style temporary shelters at designated halting points to provide resting facilities for pilgrims travelling long distances on foot. These structures are expected to offer protection from weather conditions while improving overall comfort during the multi-day journey. Healthcare preparedness has been expanded through the deployment of approximately 180 physiotherapists, recognising the physical strain experienced by many participants who walk several hundred kilometres. Medical support will also include more than 400 emergency medical kits, 20 municipal ambulances and additional ambulances operated by voluntary organisations. Six medical non-governmental organisations are expected to supplement healthcare services throughout the event.

Urban planners note that managing large religious gatherings increasingly requires balancing cultural traditions with public health, mobility and environmental considerations. Measures such as improved sanitation, reduced noise pollution and coordinated emergency services contribute to creating safer and more inclusive public events while minimising disruption to surrounding neighbourhoods. As Pune prepares to host another edition of the annual pilgrimage, authorities have urged citizens and participating organisations to cooperate with civic guidelines so that the Palkhi procession can proceed safely, efficiently and in keeping with its longstanding spiritual traditions.
