Pune Airport Expansion Drives New Road Project

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved the acquisition of nearly 14,630 square metres of land to develop a new 30-metre-wide access corridor for Lohegaon Airport, marking a significant step in supporting the airport’s ongoing expansion. The decision addresses the impending closure of an existing defence-controlled approach road while highlighting the broader challenge of balancing urban mobility, strategic infrastructure and planned city growth.

The civic body’s standing committee cleared an estimated ₹30.83 crore for the land acquisition after earlier efforts to secure land through Transferable Development Rights (TDR) and other voluntary mechanisms received limited response from property owners. The land will now be acquired under the provisions of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition framework through direct monetary compensation. The Lohegaon airport access road has become a priority infrastructure project as the current 12-metre-wide route connecting 509 Chowk to the airport passes through defence land. With modernisation works progressing at Lohegaon Airport, which also functions as an Indian Air Force base, the existing road is expected to be permanently closed, making an alternative public access route essential. The proposed replacement road, planned at a width of 30 metres, is intended to improve connectivity for passengers while accommodating future traffic demand generated by airport expansion and surrounding urban development. Civic officials had earlier secured approval for the road alignment through Pune’s development planning process before obtaining the necessary state-level clearance.

Urban mobility experts note that transport infrastructure around airports increasingly requires coordinated planning between civic authorities, defence establishments and urban development agencies. Without timely intervention, restricted access can create congestion, increase travel times and constrain economic activity linked to aviation and commercial growth. The Lohegaon airport access road is also expected to strengthen connectivity in Pune’s eastern growth corridor, where residential development and commercial investments have accelerated over the past decade. Improved road infrastructure can support more efficient movement of people and services while reducing dependence on narrow internal routes that are vulnerable to traffic bottlenecks. However, planners caution that expanding road capacity should be integrated with wider mobility strategies, including public transport, pedestrian facilities and sustainable drainage systems. Road widening alone may not provide lasting congestion relief unless supported by multimodal transport planning and coordinated land-use policies.

The shift from TDR-based land procurement to direct acquisition reflects the practical challenges local governments often face in delivering major infrastructure projects within expanding metropolitan areas. While compensation mechanisms can accelerate project implementation, experts stress that transparent acquisition processes and timely rehabilitation measures remain essential to maintaining public confidence. With land acquisition now approved, attention will turn to completing statutory procedures and beginning construction. The project is expected to play a key role in ensuring uninterrupted airport access while supporting Pune’s broader infrastructure ambitions as the city prepares for continued economic growth and rising passenger demand.
