Pune: Pune Airport is operating close to its revised daily flight capacity as additional air traffic slots open the way for more domestic and international services. The increase reflects rising travel demand from one of India’s fastest-growing urban economies, while also highlighting the need for long-term aviation infrastructure to support the city’s expanding population and business ecosystem.

The airport handled 214 flight movements on Sunday, including arrivals and departures, placing operations close to the current daily limit of 235 movements. The higher capacity became possible after additional operational slots were approved at the Indian Air Force-operated airport, enabling airlines to schedule more services. The Pune airport expansion is expected to improve connectivity for business travellers, students, tourists and the city’s large manufacturing and information technology workforce. However, transport planners note that increasing flight operations alone will not address the city’s long-term aviation requirements. The Pune airport expansion underscores the importance of integrated infrastructure planning, including improved public transport access, multimodal connectivity and efficient passenger movement to reduce congestion around the airport precinct. Urban development experts argue that aviation growth should be aligned with broader sustainability goals.
