Public Spaces Key in MMRDA’s Mumbai Retail Growth Strategy

Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, the Metropolitan Commissioner of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), articulated a forward-looking strategy for Mumbai’s retail real estate sector during his address at the Shopfwd Summit 2024.

“At MMRDA, our mandate is to facilitate growth while ensuring seamless travel across Mumbai,” remarked Dr. Mukherjee. Central to this vision is the objective of reducing cross-district travel times to approximately one hour and short-distance travel to within 30 minutes. This ambitious goal aligns with ongoing efforts to expand Mumbai’s public transport network, including the world’s largest metropolitan metro rail system, spanning over 60 kilometers already operational. Emphasizing the pivotal role of retail in fostering economic growth and employment, Dr. Mukherjee underscored MMRDA’s commitment to enabling urban development through enhanced connectivity and sustainable infrastructure.

Addressing the challenge of congestion, Dr. Mukherjee highlighted MMRDA’s investment in robust road networks complementing public transport initiatives. He stressed the importance of creating vibrant neighborhoods with ample open and public spaces surrounding retail hubs, envisioning these spaces as integral to enhancing urban livability and community well-being. Regarding retail infrastructure, Dr. Mukherjee identified parking management as a critical factor in improving customer accessibility and convenience. “Addressing parking rates and promoting designated parking spaces are crucial steps towards ensuring smoother traffic flow,” he emphasized.

“Our focus is on developing high-quality public spaces around retail establishments,” Dr. Mukherjee affirmed, outlining expectations for responsible infrastructure utilization. He showed the necessity for collaborative efforts between government entities and industry stakeholders to optimize infrastructure usage and mitigate issues like traffic congestion and unauthorized parking.
