Proactive Measures Urged in High-Risk Areas to Combat Dengue Outbreaks

The Health Department has issued a proactive directive to health centres in regions deemed low-risk but exhibiting elevated vector densities, urging intensified efforts to curb mosquito breeding activities. This initiative aims to preemptively reduce the risk of dengue outbreaks before any cases are reported.

According to a deputy director overseeing the national vector-borne disease control programme, several localities such as Navelim, Dicarpale, Marcaim, Priol, Cortalim, Upasnagar, Colvale, Casarvanem, and Valpoi have shown high incidences of mosquito breeding despite no confirmed cases of dengue. The strategy is to implement rigorous measures in these areas to diminish vector densities significantly. This proactive approach is crucial to prevent the transmission of the dengue virus from potentially infected individuals traveling to their homes in these zones from more urban centers like Panaji or Margao. “We are focusing our efforts to ensure that areas identified with high vector densities remain vigilant and take effective steps to eliminate mosquito breeding sites,” the deputy director emphasized. “Preventing the introduction of dengue into these low-risk areas is paramount. An example is Gaondongrim in Canacona, previously considered low-risk until an imported case led to local transmission. We aim to avoid such scenarios through preemptive vector control measures.”

The Health Department has also called upon public cooperation in maintaining cleanliness to prevent stagnant water accumulation, a primary breeding ground for mosquitoes. Non-compliance has prompted the issuance of show cause notices to individuals and establishments failing to adhere to sanitation guidelines. The department is actively engaging with community stakeholders to enhance awareness about the importance of eliminating potential mosquito breeding sites. This collaborative effort seeks to bolster community resilience against vector-borne diseases and safeguard public health. As the monsoon progresses and environmental conditions become conducive to mosquito breeding, sustained vigilance and prompt action in identified high-risk areas are critical. The department’s approach underscores the proactive stance required to mitigate the threat of dengue outbreaks and ensure community well-being across vulnerable regions.

The initiative aligns with broader public health goals of preemptive disease management and underscores the importance of community engagement in achieving effective vector control measures.
