Power Mech Wins Rs 563 Cr Nuclear Project

HYDERABAD: Power Mech Projects Ltd (PMPL) has announced the acquisition of a significant order worth Rs 563.23 crore from state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).

This marks PMPL’s inaugural venture into the critical nuclear power sector, as stated in a regulatory filing by the company. The contract involves civil, structural, and architectural works for the turbine island package of the 2×700 MWe Pressurized Heavy-Water Reactor (PHWR) at the Kaiga Atomic Power Project units 5 and 6, located in the Uttar Kannada district of Karnataka. The scope of work is comprehensive, encompassing civil, electrical, and structural elements, including the construction of the turbine generator (TG) building, foundations for all equipment, chemical laboratory, storage tanks, peripheral drains, and sewage network.

This project is slated for completion within a 32-month timeframe, followed by a 12-month guarantee period. The contract represents a strategic expansion of Power Mech’s capabilities in industrial civil works, extending their expertise into the nuclear power sector. “In securing this project, another door opens for PMPL to further its establishment in the nuclear power sector and contribute to the nation’s growing sustainable energy needs,” Sajja Kishore Babu, PMPL Chairman and Managing Director, said in a statement.

The Indian government’s ambitious plan to augment the country’s nuclear power capacity from its current modest 3 per cent contribution to the national grid to 22,480 MW by 2031 highlights the importance of such projects. This expansion is projected to increase nuclear power’s share of electricity generation to nearly 9 per cent by 2047, effectively multiplying its contribution tenfold. This significant order not only underscores Power Mech’s growing prowess in the industrial construction domain but also aligns with India’s broader vision of enhancing its nuclear power infrastructure. By securing this contract, Power Mech is poised to play a pivotal role in the nation’s journey towards achieving a robust and diversified energy portfolio.
