Power Bank Smoke Forces IndiGo Flight Diversion to Hyderabad

An IndiGo flight travelling from Delhi to Chennai was diverted to Hyderabad on October 11 after smoke was detected from a passenger’s personal electronic device in an overhead bin, the airline said. The aircraft landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, and no injuries were reported.

The flight, 6E 6115, was operating on the Delhi–Chennai route when cabin crew detected smoke from the device. IndiGo said its crew responded promptly and brought the situation under control using established onboard procedures. The airline’s statement described the item as a customer’s personal electronic device.

The pilots then diverted the aircraft to Hyderabad in line with established protocols, allowing it to land safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The incident temporarily disrupted the flight’s planned journey to Chennai but did not result in reported injuries among passengers or crew.

IndiGo said a replacement aircraft was provided to carry the passengers onward to Chennai. The airline did not provide further details in the statement about the passenger’s device, the extent of any damage inside the aircraft or the duration of the disruption.

The incident places renewed operational attention on the handling of personal electronic devices carried by passengers, particularly items stored in cabin baggage or overhead bins. In this case, the airline said the cabin crew acted after smoke was detected and that the pilots diverted the aircraft after the situation was brought under control.

The airline’s statement did not specify whether the device was a power bank. Reports associated with the incident described it as a power bank, while IndiGo’s statement referred more generally to a personal electronic device. The carrier said the matter was being handled under established safety protocols, with the passengers’ onward journey arranged from Hyderabad.
