Parama Flyover Ramps to Undergo Extensive Resurfacing

The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has announced a significant maintenance initiative for the Parama flyover, one of the city’s most critical traffic arteries. The project involves the resurfacing of two key ramps, necessitating traffic blocks and coordinated efforts with the city’s traffic police. The ramps, one connecting the flyover with EM Bypass near Science City and the other providing access from the AJC Bose Road flyover, will undergo extensive repairs starting towards the end of August, with work expected to continue for a month.

A senior KMDA official disclosed that the resurfacing work is crucial due to the deteriorating condition of the ramps. “The ramps have developed craters and uneven stretches, particularly near the expansion joints, causing discomfort to motorists,” the official stated. To mitigate the impact on traffic flow, the work will primarily occur after 10 PM, minimising disruption during peak hours.

The east-bound ramp linking the AJC Bose Road flyover with the Parama flyover spans 500 metres, while the EM Bypass ramp, which directs traffic towards the Park Circus-bound section of the flyover, measures 1.02 kilometres. Both ramps, each 6 metres wide, have been reported by drivers to cause significant discomfort due to the uneven surface. “The journey from the AJC Bose Road flyover to the Parama flyover has become quite uncomfortable,” remarked a regular commuter who travels daily between Salt Lake and BBD Bag. The Parama flyover is a vital route for thousands of vehicles heading towards EM Bypass, Salt Lake, and adjacent regions, making these repairs essential to maintaining smooth traffic flow.

In addition to resurfacing, the KMDA has planned the installation of crash barriers along both ramps to enhance safety. This comprehensive maintenance project is estimated to cost over ₹1.6 crore. The KMDA aims to complete the work efficiently while ensuring minimal inconvenience to the public. The police have confirmed that special traffic arrangements will be in place to manage the expected disruptions. The Parama flyover is known for its uninterrupted traffic flow, making it a preferred route for many motorists. Over 150 vehicles per minute use the flyover to reach the racecourse crossing of AJC Bose Road, with a similar number exiting onto EM Bypass at various points. As the city braces for these necessary repairs, the KMDA’s focus remains on improving road infrastructure while balancing the demands of an ever-growing traffic load.
