Panaji Heat Surges 5.1°C Above Normal as IMD Extends Alert

Panaji recorded a maximum temperature of 36.6°C on Monday, 5.1°C above normal, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert warning of hot and humid conditions in Goa on October 13.

Mormugao also experienced unusually high temperatures, with the maximum reaching 35.8°C, or 4.5°C above normal, according to IMD data reported by Times of India. The readings indicate that both the state capital and the coastal port town faced significantly warmer conditions than their usual levels for the period.

Panaji’s minimum temperature was recorded at 25°C, which was 0.7°C above normal. In Mormugao, the minimum temperature stood at 24.4°C, or 0.3°C below normal.

Humidity levels varied between the two locations. Relative humidity in Panaji was 59%, reported as 21 percentage points below normal, while Mormugao recorded 74%, which was 12 percentage points below normal. Despite the lower-than-normal humidity in Panaji, the combination of elevated maximum temperature and humid conditions prompted the weather warning.

The IMD defines hot and humid weather at a station as a situation in which the observed maximum temperature is at least 3°C above normal and relative humidity is above normal. The warning therefore reflects the interaction between temperature and moisture rather than temperature alone.

The alert has direct implications for everyday activity in Goa’s urban areas, including outdoor work, travel and exposure during the hottest part of the day. Panaji’s reading was more than two degrees above the IMD threshold used to define hot conditions when combined with above-normal humidity.

The IMD’s yellow alert for October 13 is expected to guide public and administrative attention towards hot and humid conditions across the state. The next weather observations will indicate whether temperatures in Panaji and Mormugao remain significantly above normal or begin to ease.
