A five-year-old girl died after falling into a water-filled construction pit in Mundur, Palakkad, on Saturday afternoon, prompting police to register a case of unnatural death.
The deceased was identified as Anusree, the daughter of Jagatheesh and Thulasi of Palakkeezh in Mundur. According to Mundur Police, the incident occurred at around 1.45pm at a residential property where a pit had been dug for installing pillars during the construction of a house.
Police said Anusree’s parents had gone to attend a funeral and had left her in the care of her uncle. The family’s old house and the uncle’s house are located on the same premises. After the parents returned, they found the child missing and began searching for her.
The girl’s uncle later noticed her footwear near the construction pit. He found Anusree inside the water-filled pit and pulled her out. She was taken to a nearby hospital, but doctors could not save her.
Anusree was a UKG student at Nochuppully School. The incident took place at a private residential construction site within the family premises, according to the report. The available information does not establish how long the pit had remained open or whether any protective barricading had been installed around it.
Mundur Police registered a case of unnatural death. A postmortem examination was conducted at Palakkad General Hospital. The police investigation and postmortem proceedings will determine the circumstances surrounding the child’s fall and death.
