Odisha Invests in Rural Power Stability

TP Southern Odisha Distribution Limited (TPSODL), a collaboration between Tata Power and the Government of Odisha, is spearheading a transformative effort to enhance rural electrification in the state. With a focus on improving power infrastructure in the regions of Raighar, Umerkote, and the surrounding areas of Nabarangapur, the initiative seeks to provide stable electricity, support economic growth, and improve the overall quality of life for residents.

A key component of this infrastructure upgrade is the enhancement of the Raighar Primary Substation (PSS), where three Power Transformers (PTRs) have been upgraded to 5 MVA, and one to 7.5 MVA. This increase in capacity is expected to improve power supply stability and support a growing demand for electricity. Additionally, the installation of capacitor banks on 11kV feeders will stabilise voltage levels, ensuring a more consistent power flow and improved supply quality. In a move designed to address long-term power reliability in the region, TPSODL has partnered with the Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited (OPTCL) to construct a new Grid Substation (GSS) in Raighar. Once completed, this substation will significantly reduce voltage fluctuations and guarantee a steady, uninterrupted power supply for the area. The addition of this substation aligns with the goal of making power distribution in the region more resilient and sustainable.

Furthermore, under the state government’s Mukhyamantri Shakti Bikash Jojana (MMSBJ), TPSODL is finalising the construction of several new Primary Substations in other areas, including Dhodra, Jodinga, and Dumrimunda. These substations, each equipped with 2×5 MVA transformers, are expected to improve electricity access for households, businesses, schools, and healthcare centres. These developments are particularly important for underserved areas where reliable power has historically been a challenge.
TPSODL is also modernising the region’s overall power network by upgrading 33kV and 11kV transmission lines. The addition of Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVRs) to key 11kV feeders will further enhance the reliability of the power distribution system, ensuring that voltage levels are maintained consistently, even during peak demand periods. These technical improvements are a critical part of ensuring a sustainable and efficient electricity supply. Amit Kumar Garg, CEO of TPSODL, highlighted the company’s commitment to not just enhancing power distribution, but also empowering local communities through innovation and sustainability. He explained, “Our mission extends beyond simply providing power. We are working to uplift rural communities through technological advancements and reliable energy solutions that contribute to long-term economic and social growth.”
The impact of these power upgrades is expected to be far-reaching, with the enhanced infrastructure set to improve education, healthcare, and business opportunities in the region.

A more stable electricity supply will enable schools to operate without disruption, allow hospitals to offer consistent healthcare services, and help businesses expand their operations. Furthermore, the rural economy is likely to benefit from improved power for agriculture, which is a crucial part of the local economy. Ultimately, these efforts by TPSODL are not just about providing electricity; they are about enabling sustainable and equitable development in rural Odisha. By focusing on the reliability and quality of the power supply, the company is helping to lay the groundwork for a more prosperous and self-sustaining future for the region’s residents.
