Noida is preparing to launch a wider electric public transport network across key urban and regional corridors from mid-June, marking one of the city’s largest recent attempts to reduce dependence on informal transport and improve low-emission mobility access across the National Capital Region.
The expanded Noida electric bus network is expected to connect residential, commercial and institutional zones with Greater Noida, intercity transit hubs and the upcoming international airport corridor in Jewar. Officials involved in the project said the first operational phase will include multiple intra-city and regional routes linking transport nodes, office districts and high-growth urban clusters. The move comes at a time when Noida and Greater Noida are witnessing rapid urban expansion driven by infrastructure investment, industrial growth and large-scale housing development. Despite the region’s economic rise, public mobility options have remained uneven, leaving many daily commuters dependent on private vehicles, shared autos and app-based services. Urban mobility experts say the introduction of a structured electric bus network could help improve commuting reliability while easing pressure on congested roads. Authorities plan to deploy a fleet of 100 electric buses in the initial phase, including double-decker air-conditioned vehicles for high-density routes.
The buses are expected to operate on corridors connecting Sector 90, Botanical Garden, Sector 62, industrial areas in Phase 2, Greater Noida civic centres and the Noida International Airport region. Additional links to major interstate transit hubs in Delhi and Ghaziabad are also being prepared. The Noida electric bus network is being developed through a public-sector operating arrangement, with transport officials finalising route planning, staffing and ticketing infrastructure ahead of launch. Digital ticketing through mobile applications is expected to complement manual fare systems, reflecting the broader shift towards integrated urban transport management. Urban planners view the initiative as significant for both environmental and economic reasons. Transport remains a major contributor to NCR’s air pollution burden, and expanding electric public transit is increasingly seen as necessary for meeting clean-air and climate resilience goals. Analysts note that electric buses, when supported by charging infrastructure and reliable service frequency, can reduce emissions intensity while offering lower operating costs over time.
The project also aligns with the anticipated rise in passenger movement linked to airport operations and industrial activity along the Yamuna Expressway region. Better bus connectivity could improve workforce mobility, reduce first-mile and last-mile travel gaps and support more equitable access for lower-income commuters who often face high daily transport costs. Infrastructure preparations are simultaneously underway to support operations, including charging facilities and dedicated depots for parking and maintenance. Officials associated with the rollout indicated that transport services would be tested before full-scale deployment to assess operational efficiency and route readiness. As Noida’s urban footprint continues to expand, transport specialists argue that long-term success will depend not only on fleet size but also on integration with metro systems, pedestrian access and safe last-mile connectivity. For rapidly growing NCR cities, the transition towards cleaner and more accessible public mobility is increasingly becoming both an environmental necessity and an economic imperative.
