The Noida Authority has given in-principle approval for the construction of a second expressway between Noida and Greater Noida.
This ambitious project is designed to ease traffic congestion and accommodate the growing transportation demands of the region, especially with the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar expected to attract a significant influx of commuters. The proposed expressway will span 35 kilometres, offering a much-needed alternative route to the heavily used Noida-Greater Noida Expressway. This new infrastructure initiative is being planned in collaboration with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to ensure robust engineering standards and efficient implementation. Officials are deliberating over two potential designs for the expressway. The first option is an eight-lane ground-level road that will run parallel to the Yamuna embankment, connecting key areas from the Okhla barrage near Kalindi Kunj in Delhi to the Yamuna Expressway at Pari Chowk in Greater Noida. Alternatively, a six-lane elevated expressway is under consideration, covering the same route. The final design decision will be made once the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is completed, factoring in technical feasibility, cost analysis, and environmental impact assessments.
The new expressway is poised to play a pivotal role in decongesting the existing expressway, which has been under tremendous pressure due to rapid urban development and increasing vehicular movement. With the Noida International Airport set to become operational soon, the region is anticipated to witness a surge in traffic from both domestic and international sources. This underscores the urgency of having a well-planned, high-capacity transport corridor to manage future mobility needs. One of the key highlights of the project is its strategic connectivity. The expressway will feature meticulously planned entry and exit points, with interchanges and underpasses to ensure seamless traffic flow. Sector 168 has been identified as a crucial interchange point, linking the new expressway with the Faridabad-Noida-Ghaziabad (FNG) Expressway. This will significantly enhance cross-border connectivity, facilitating smoother commutes between Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad. Additionally, the expressway will connect with Sector 150, further boosting internal connectivity within Noida. This sector is set to become an important hub, linking the expressway with main roads that cater to the rapidly expanding residential and commercial areas. The integration with the Yamuna Expressway near Pari Chowk will also improve access for commuters travelling between Delhi and Agra, enhancing regional connectivity.
Beyond easing traffic congestion, the expressway is expected to have broader economic and environmental benefits. Improved transport infrastructure will support regional growth by facilitating faster movement of goods and people, thus attracting more businesses and investments to the area. The expressway’s design will incorporate sustainable features, including green buffer zones and eco-friendly construction practices to minimise environmental impact. To address ecological concerns, the project will undergo thorough environmental assessments, with expert consultations to ensure that the development aligns with sustainability goals. The expressway’s route will take into consideration existing road networks, and efforts will be made to preserve green spaces and reduce carbon emissions. As the project progresses, Noida, Greater Noida, and Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) officials are scheduled to hold meetings to finalise key project details. These discussions will focus on funding arrangements, project timelines, and the incorporation of advanced technologies to enhance operational efficiency.
The second expressway between Noida and Greater Noida represents a significant step towards building a resilient, future-ready transportation network. It aligns with the vision of creating sustainable, equitable, and smart cities, catering to the evolving needs of the urban population while supporting economic growth and environmental stewardship.
