A 60-year-old night guard was killed after an allegedly speeding motorcycle struck him on National Highway 306 near Silchar in Assam’s Cachar district on Thursday, with the rider fleeing after abandoning the vehicle and residents demanding an immediate arrest.
The deceased was identified as Zakir Hussain Mazumdar, a resident of Barohali in Sonai. According to police, Mazumdar was walking along the highway near Uttar Krishnapur when the motorcycle hit him. He sustained critical injuries in the collision.
Mazumdar worked as a night guard at a nearby workshop, the report said. Police recovered his body from the scene and sent it to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy. The investigation will determine the circumstances of the collision and the identity of the motorcyclist.
The rider allegedly left the motorcycle at the site and fled after the crash. Police from Sonai police station reached the area, but their arrival was followed by protests from local residents. People gathered at the scene and urged the police to identify the rider and take stringent legal action.
The collision has placed renewed attention on the risks faced by pedestrians using NH-306, although the available report does not provide details about road lighting, pedestrian facilities, traffic controls or the speed of the motorcycle. It also does not state whether the abandoned vehicle had been formally linked to the rider.
Residents’ demands centre on locating the absconding motorcyclist and pursuing legal action in the case. Police recovered the vehicle and continued efforts to establish the rider’s identity, while Mazumdar’s body was sent for post-mortem examination as part of the official procedure.
