New Town Kolkata Integrates Drones in Mosquito Control Strategy

The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) has initiated the use of drone technology to combat mosquito breeding in the township.

This innovative approach aims to address the challenges posed by stagnant water bodies and overgrown vegetation, which are prime breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The decision to employ drones for aerial surveillance comes as part of NKDA’s comprehensive vector control programme. Drones are being utilized to identify potential mosquito breeding sites, particularly in areas that are difficult to access manually. By providing a bird’s-eye view, drones enable the detection of stagnant water pockets and overgrown vegetation along canal banks and other hard-to-reach areas. Once these hotspots are identified, ground teams can promptly apply larvicides to eliminate mosquito larvae before they mature into adult mosquitoes.

In addition to drone surveillance, NKDA has intensified its efforts to clean up green verges and vacant plots across New Town. This includes the removal of bushes, weeds, and other debris that can trap water and create breeding sites for mosquitoes. The cleaning drive is being carried out in phases throughout the year, with dedicated teams working to ensure that all areas are free from potential mosquito breeding grounds. To further bolster these efforts, NKDA has increased the frequency of fumigation and larvicide spraying across the township. Special attention is being given to under-construction sites, where stagnant water is often found. Larvicides are being applied to these areas, and notices are issued to the property owners to ensure that no stagnant water accumulates in the future.

Community involvement plays a crucial role in the success of these initiatives. NKDA has been actively engaging with residents and local organizations to raise awareness about the importance of eliminating mosquito breeding sites. Educational campaigns, distribution of informational leaflets, and door-to-door visits are part of the strategy to encourage public participation in maintaining a mosquito-free environment. The integration of drone technology into mosquito control efforts reflects a broader trend towards smart city solutions in urban India. By leveraging technology, New Town Kolkata is setting an example for other cities in the country to adopt innovative and sustainable practices in public health management.

As the monsoon season approaches, the risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and chikungunya increases. However, with the proactive measures being implemented by NKDA, New Town Kolkata is better prepared to mitigate these risks and ensure the health and well-being of its residents.
