The third Thane Creek Bridge (TCB-3), has reached completion and is now awaiting final approval for its inauguration.
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the agency responsible for the ₹850 crore project, has confirmed that the bridge is technically ready for public use. The inauguration of this six-lane bridge, spanning approximately 1.8 km and running parallel to the existing Thane Creek Bridge, is expected to substantially improve connectivity between the two major urban centres. This development is poised to benefit daily commuters and transporters alike, who currently face significant delays, particularly during peak travel hours.
While civil work and road construction on the bridge were finalised in April, the project is currently in a phase where several formalities, including security clearances and ministerial scheduling, are being addressed. MSRDC officials have indicated that they are awaiting confirmation from central authorities regarding the bridge’s formal inauguration date. Upon receiving this clearance, the bridge will be opened to the public. The new bridge is anticipated to become a vital link in easing traffic bottlenecks along the Sion-Panvel Highway, one of the busiest routes connecting Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Currently, the existing Thane Creek Bridge handles over 1.3 lakh vehicles daily, often leading to severe congestion and prolonged commute times. The addition of TCB-3 is expected to significantly improve vehicular flow and reduce commute times, contributing to a more efficient and sustainable transportation network in the region.
The development of Navi Mumbai as a growing commercial and residential hub has further underscored the critical importance of seamless connectivity with Mumbai. The new bridge is expected to play a crucial role in supporting this growth by providing a more efficient and reliable transportation link. Its timely inauguration is seen as a significant step forward in enhancing regional mobility and facilitating smoother movement of people and goods. The remaining step is the formal approval from central authorities to open this much-anticipated public asset.
