The picturesque hill station of Mussoorie is poised to become significantly more accessible from Delhi and other parts of India, thanks to a substantial infrastructure project.
A 26-kilometre elevated road, with an estimated cost of ₹6,100 crore, is set to be constructed along the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway. This ambitious undertaking promises to drastically reduce travel time to the popular tourist destination and alleviate the persistent traffic congestion plaguing Dehradun city. The Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) has confirmed that the project will necessitate land acquisition across 26 localities within Dehradun. This process will involve the demolition of approximately 2,614 structures, primarily houses situated along the banks of the Rispana and Bindal rivers. While this displacement presents a considerable social challenge, authorities anticipate that the improved connectivity and reduced congestion will yield substantial long-term benefits for the region.
Project officials estimate that the elevated road will slash the travel time between Delhi and Mussoorie to a mere four hours by car. This enhanced accessibility is expected to provide a significant boost to tourism in Mussoorie, often referred to as the “Queen of the Hills,” attracting a greater influx of visitors and bolstering the local economy. Furthermore, the diversion of traffic via the elevated corridor is projected to offer much-needed respite to Dehradun residents who currently endure heavy traffic flow on a daily basis. The state government is currently in the process of finalising a land acquisition policy to address the concerns of those affected by the project. Initial indications suggest that affected individuals are likely to receive monetary compensation for their acquired land and properties. While the possibility of land exchange has been discussed, the district administration views monetary compensation as the more probable outcome, citing the lack of inspection of proposed land banks and the absence of plans for developing new ones.
Preparations for the land acquisition are already underway, with houses earmarked for demolition being identified with red markings. A social impact assessment survey is being conducted and is expected to be completed within the next fortnight. This survey will play a crucial role in understanding the broader societal consequences of the project and informing the compensation and rehabilitation measures. The administration is proceeding with its preparations based on the anticipation of monetary settlements for those displaced. While the immediate focus is on reducing travel time and congestion, the long-term vision for such infrastructure projects must align with principles of sustainable and equitable urban development. Integrating green infrastructure, ensuring fair compensation and rehabilitation for displaced communities, and promoting public transport linkages will be crucial to ensure that this development contributes to a more liveable and environmentally conscious region. The project’s success will not only be measured by reduced travel times but also by its ability to foster inclusive growth and minimise its ecological footprint.
