Nerul Gymkhana Invests in Advanced Waste Management Technology and Infrastructure

In a progressive move towards environmental sustainability, the Humanitarian Wing of Nerul Gymkhana has launched key initiatives to enhance waste management practices in Navi Mumbai. The organization has invested in a state-of-the-art Baling Machine and expanded its waste storage infrastructure, reflecting a strong commitment to eco-friendly practices and community welfare.

The newly acquired baling machine, procured at a cost of ₹4.5 lakh, is designed specifically for processing Multi-Layered Plastic (MLP), a significant contributor to plastic waste. “This crucial step will support the recycling and repurposing of plastic waste, which is a major byproduct of the waste segregation efforts carried out by women ragpickers,” said KP Sherif, a trustee of Nerul Gymkhana. By compacting plastic waste efficiently, the machine makes it easier to transport for recycling, reducing environmental strain. In addition to this technological advancement, the Gymkhana has responded to a request from Stree Mukti Sanghatana, a prominent NGO dedicated to women’s empowerment and environmental causes, by expanding its waste storage facilities.

The extension of the existing shed, completed at a cost of ₹2.5 lakh, has effectively doubled the storage capacity. This expansion allows for better segregation and management of waste, improving both efficiency and hygiene. “The increased storage space enables the collection and sorting of larger volumes of waste, ensuring proper segregation of wet and dry waste before it is sent to end users. This not only streamlines the waste management process but also fosters a cleaner and more organised environment,” noted Vinoo Raina, another trustee of the Gymkhana. These initiatives are more than just infrastructure improvements—they directly impact the lives of women waste collectors by providing safer, more efficient working conditions. The enhanced facilities support their efforts in waste segregation, contributing to their livelihoods while promoting environmental sustainability.

“By investing in both technology and infrastructure, Nerul Gymkhana is reinforcing its commitment to community service and environmental responsibility. This sets a strong example for other institutions to follow,” the trustees added. Nerul Gymkhana’s efforts underline the importance of community-driven environmental initiatives, where collaboration between civic bodies, NGOs, and local organisations can lead to impactful, sustainable change.
