North Bengal Medical College & Hospital (NBMCH) has ordered 76 staff quarters on its campus to be vacated after a review allegedly found that the accommodation had been occupied without valid entitlement for years, including cases where rooms were rented out to outsiders.
The quarters were identified during a recent review of staff accommodation, according to college authorities. Koushik Ishore, the medical superintendent-cum-vice principal of NBMCH, said employees without proper entitlement had been asked to vacate the premises and that the administration would take steps to reclaim the accommodation.
“We have identified 76 quarters that one or more people have occupied for a long period without valid entitlement,” an official said, according to the report. Sources at the medical college said most of the quarters were allotted to Group-D employees and that some of the buildings were old and in poor condition.
The review also found cases involving retired employees who had continued to occupy the quarters with their family members, sources said. In other instances, employees allegedly rented out the rooms to outsiders and collected between ₹3,000 and ₹10,000 a month, depending on the room and its location.
If established, such commercial use would mean that accommodation intended for medical college employees had been used to generate rental income. The authorities have warned employees against allowing outsiders to occupy the quarters and said that the identified occupants without valid entitlement must leave.
“The staff quarters are meant exclusively for eligible employees and their use for private rental or occupation by outsiders violates the rules,” Ishore said. He added that all accommodation held without proper entitlement would be reclaimed.
The administration is also expected to examine the records connected with the 76 quarters before taking further action. The review is therefore likely to involve checking allotment and entitlement records, as well as the status of current occupants.
Sources said NBMCH had faced complaints over unauthorised occupation of staff accommodation for a long period. The latest order places the focus on how institutional housing was allotted, retained and monitored over the years, particularly in cases involving retired employees and alleged subletting.
The quarters form part of the medical college campus’s staff accommodation system, which is intended to house eligible employees rather than outside tenants. The administration’s stated next step is to verify the records of the identified quarters and proceed with reclaiming accommodation held without proper entitlement.
