Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation has initiated the procurement process for a long-term maintenance contract for Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1, signalling a strategic shift towards lifecycle-based asset management as urban rail systems across India increasingly prioritise operational reliability alongside network expansion. The proposed five-year contract, scheduled to commence from November 2026, covers preventive and corrective maintenance of rolling stock and depot equipment, including Intermediate Overhauling (IOH) of metro trainsets. The move reflects the growing recognition that dependable public transport depends not only on new infrastructure but also on sustained investment in maintenance, safety and operational efficiency.
According to tender documents, the selected contractor will be responsible for maintaining trains through planned inspection cycles while undertaking comprehensive overhauls that restore critical mechanical and electrical systems to prescribed operating standards. The maintenance programme extends beyond routine servicing, encompassing detailed inspections of wheelsets, suspension assemblies, braking systems, traction equipment, air-conditioning units and other safety-critical components. Urban mobility specialists note that such contracts play a crucial role in reducing unexpected breakdowns, improving punctuality and extending the operational life of expensive transit assets. For rapidly expanding metropolitan regions such as Navi Mumbai, predictable metro operations can strengthen commuter confidence and encourage greater reliance on public transport, supporting broader goals of reducing road congestion and transport-related emissions. The Intermediate Overhauling programme represents one of the most significant elements of the contract. During this process, trainsets undergo extensive dismantling, engineering inspection and refurbishment. Components affected by wear are repaired or replaced, wheels are reprofiled for smoother operations, axles undergo specialised testing for structural integrity, and onboard systems are comprehensively serviced before the trains are reassembled.
Passenger-facing improvements also form part of the overhaul process. Metro coaches are scheduled to receive deep interior and exterior cleaning using environmentally responsible materials, while ventilation and air-conditioning systems are serviced to improve hygiene and travel comfort. Before returning to commercial operations, refurbished trains must complete a sequence of stationary inspections and dynamic trials to verify safety, performance and reliability under operating conditions. The tender process outlines a bid security requirement of ₹7.71 lakh, with a pre-bid meeting scheduled for July 27 and bid submissions closing in mid-August. Officials expect the maintenance arrangement to support uninterrupted operations as passenger demand on Navi Mumbai Metro continues to grow.
