Mumbai’s Coastal Road and Sea Link Connection Imminent, Promises Seamless Commute

In a promising development for Mumbai’s commuters, the much-anticipated bridging of the Coastal Road and Bandra-Worli Sea Link is set to materialise this week.

Since its partial inauguration on March 12, the Coastal Road has witnessed a staggering influx of vehicles, with approximately 4.5 lakh vehicles traversing its nine-minute signal-free stretch from Worli to Marine Drive. This translates to a daily average of around 19,500 vehicles, with peak traffic reaching its zenith on March 15, recording 22,880 vehicles, and an hourly peak of 2,943 vehicles on March 21, during the 10-11 am slot. The impending connection between the southbound arm of the Coastal Road and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link is facilitated by the arrival and preparation of a 136-metre-long bow string girder on-site. The completion of this crucial link is expected by Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in the project timeline. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has assured the public that the entire Coastal Road will be fully operational by June. Despite its closure on weekends, exceptions were made on April 13, coinciding with Eid and IPL matches, demonstrating flexibility in its operational schedule. According to BMC officials, traffic surges are primarily observed during the hours of 10 am to noon and 6 pm to 7 pm on weekdays. Operating from Monday to Friday, 8 am to 8 pm, the Coastal Road provides convenient access with three entry points and two exits strategically located along its route. Entry from the Worli junction is restricted after 5 pm, ensuring smooth traffic flow during peak hours. This imminent connection not only promises enhanced connectivity but also heralds a new era of seamless commuting for Mumbai’s residents and visitors alike.

“Currently, work on the northbound carriageway is underway, which is why we had to keep restricted timings,” said a civic official. Marine Drive resident Mahendra Hemdev said, “Coastal Road has been a game changer as far as seamless traffic movement is concerned. We look forward to the opening of the northbound arm.” Peddar Road resident Dr Bomi Pardiwala said traffic on it has reduced. “The volume of honking serves as a clear indicator for us. During weekdays, we have observed a decrease in honking. But on Saturdays, when Coastal Road is closed, honking increases as traffic is back in our area,” he explained. “Nevertheless, there are persistent bottlenecks that demand attention, such as the U-turn required to access Coastal Road from the Breach Candy interchange.” A BMC official said installation of a signal is in progress at Breach Candy junction, which would ensure that access can be closer to the interchange rather than through a U tur
