Around 100 people fell ill after eating food at a wedding ceremony in Mumbai’s Nahur area, with several patients admitted to hospitals and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) collecting food samples to determine whether contamination or adulteration was involved.
The incident took place on Sunday at Nalanda Buddha Vihar Hall in Nahur, in Mumbai’s eastern suburbs. Around 400 to 500 guests were present at the ceremony, according to officials cited in the report.
People who ate during the last serving began experiencing health problems soon afterwards. Those affected reportedly developed vomiting and other symptoms and were taken to hospitals in the surrounding areas for treatment.
An official said approximately 100 people became ill. Of these, 22 were admitted to Agarwal Hospital in Mulund, while four children were taken to Mulund Kamgar Hospital. Five other patients were admitted to a hospital in Vikhroli.
Health officials said that all the hospitalised patients were in stable condition and were receiving treatment. The administration and health department were monitoring the situation, according to the report.
The FDA collected samples of the food served at the ceremony and sent them for testing. The investigation is intended to establish whether the illness was linked to food adulteration, contamination or another cause. The supplied report does not identify the specific food item responsible or provide the results of the laboratory examination.
The incident highlights the operational challenge of tracing food-related illness at large gatherings, where hundreds of people may consume meals prepared and served within a short period. In this case, the timing of symptoms among guests who ate during the final serving has been noted by officials, but the source of the illness remains subject to test results.
The administration and health authorities are continuing to monitor the admitted patients while the food samples undergo examination. Further findings from the FDA’s testing will determine the reported cause of the illness.
