Mumbai Weather: Heat Climbs to 37°C as AQI Turns Moderate

Mumbai weather remained unusually hot on Sunday, with the city recording a maximum temperature of 37 degrees Celsius at the India Meteorological Department’s Colaba observatory, three degrees above the seasonal average. The minimum temperature was 25.6 degrees Celsius, 1.5 degrees above normal, as hot conditions continued across the city.

The Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum of 36.3 degrees Celsius, which was 1.9 degrees above normal. Its minimum temperature stood at 22.4 degrees Celsius, or 0.5 degrees above the seasonal average, according to IMD data reported by Mid-Day.

The elevated temperatures have persisted in Mumbai for several weeks, keeping heat exposure relevant for residents, commuters and outdoor workers. The weather conditions also coincided with moderate air quality. Mumbai’s overall Air Quality Index was 129 on Sunday morning, according to figures available through the Central Pollution Control Board’s SAMEER app.

Under India’s national AQI classification, readings from 51 to 100 are considered satisfactory, while readings between 101 and 200 fall in the moderate category. Mumbai’s reading of 129 therefore placed the city in the moderate air-quality range.

Dahanu recorded Maharashtra’s highest maximum temperature among the reporting stations, at 37.7 degrees Celsius, which was 4.5 degrees above normal. Ratnagiri followed with 37.2 degrees Celsius. Other districts reporting high temperatures included Solapur at 35.9 degrees Celsius, Akola at 35.3 degrees Celsius, Amravati at 35.2 degrees Celsius and Sangli at 34.1 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures varied sharply across the state. Yavatmal recorded Maharashtra’s lowest minimum temperature at 12.4 degrees Celsius, 5.4 degrees below normal. Jalgaon and Nashik recorded minimum temperatures of 14.2 degrees Celsius each, while Malegaon recorded 14.2 degrees Celsius and Pune recorded 15.2 degrees Celsius.

Pune recorded a maximum temperature of 33.1 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 15.2 degrees Celsius. The city’s seasonal rainfall stood at 428 millimetres against a normal 826 millimetres, representing a deficit of 398 millimetres.

The IMD forecast for Pune on Monday indicated mainly clear skies, with the maximum and minimum temperatures expected to be around 32 degrees Celsius and 15 degrees Celsius respectively. The latest readings leave Mumbai’s immediate weather picture defined by above-normal heat, while the city’s air quality remains within the moderate category.
