Mumbai has begun a large-scale land clearance exercise in Mulund to advance a critical segment of the city’s east-west transport network, marking a significant milestone in one of its largest urban mobility investments. The removal of hundreds of structures along the planned alignment of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road is expected to unlock construction of a key tunnel section designed to reduce travel times, ease congestion and improve cross-city connectivity. The civic administration has initiated clearance operations in parts of Mulund where residential and commercial structures occupy land required for the upcoming transport corridor. The exercise forms part of preparations for the eastern portal of the project’s underground tunnel system, which will connect western and eastern suburbs through a new road link beneath environmentally sensitive terrain.

Urban mobility specialists view the project as an important intervention in Mumbai’s long-standing east-west connectivity challenge. The current clearance process highlights the complex balance between infrastructure expansion and community impacts.
