Mumbai Toll Hike Raises Entry Charges Up to Rs 35 From October 1

Mumbai toll hike will make entry through five major city gateways more expensive for mini buses, light commercial vehicles, trucks, buses and heavy vehicles from October 1, according to an MSRDC notice reported by Loksatta. The revised charges will apply at the Vashi, Airoli, Mulund, LBS and Dahisar toll plazas.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation has increased the toll for mini buses and light commercial vehicles from Rs 75 to Rs 90. The charge for trucks and buses will rise from Rs 150 to Rs 180, while heavy vehicles will pay Rs 225 instead of the existing Rs 190.

The increases are Rs 15 for mini buses and light commercial vehicles, Rs 30 for trucks and buses, and Rs 35 for heavy vehicles. The new rates will come into effect on Thursday, October 1, the report said.

The five toll plazas were established to recover the cost of infrastructure built by MSRDC to improve traffic movement into and within Mumbai. The corporation has constructed 55 flyovers in the city for the stated purpose of reducing congestion and making travel faster. Toll collection at these locations is scheduled to continue until 2027.

The revised charges apply to vehicle categories that continue to be subject to tolls. In October 2024, the state government exempted light vehicles, BEST buses, Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation buses and school vehicles from toll payments. Those vehicles have not been charged at the relevant toll points since the exemption was introduced.

The latest increase follows the toll revision cycle followed by MSRDC. According to the report, toll rates are revised once every three years, with the previous increase taking place in 2023. The corporation published an advertisement notice on Wednesday announcing the latest changes.

The immediate effect will be on commercial operators and passenger services using the five entry routes. For a vehicle making repeated trips through a toll point, the revised charge will add to operating expenses from October 1. The notice, as reported, specifies the new rates by vehicle category but does not indicate any change to the exemptions for light vehicles, BEST buses, state transport buses or school vehicles.

The new rates will remain part of the toll structure at the five Mumbai entry points while the collection arrangement continues through 2027, according to the information published by Loksatta.
