Mumbai is embarking on an ambitious project to introduce a water metro system, aiming to revolutionise urban mobility and provide a sustainable alternative to traditional transport modes.
The project, which is currently in the planning phase, is expected to significantly ease congestion and reduce the city’s carbon footprint. The detailed project report (DPR) for the water metro is slated for completion by the end of April 2025. A special purpose vehicle (SPV) will be established in partnership with the Union government on a 50:50 basis to oversee the execution and management of the water metro system.

The network aims to integrate seamlessly with existing modes of public transport, such as the suburban railway and metro systems, providing commuters with a holistic and efficient travel experience.
