Mumbai Sees Rising Temperatures, Air Quality Stays Moderate
Mumbai experienced a warm start to the day on Sunday, January 26, with a minimum temperature of 20.2°C recorded in suburban Santacruz. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted clear skies for the city and its suburbs, with temperatures expected to rise to a maximum of 35°C by afternoon. The day’s relative humidity stands at 84%, with sunrise and sunset recorded at 7:14 AM and 6:28 PM, respectively.
Data from the Santacruz observatory highlighted a maximum temperature of 34.5°C and a minimum of 20.2°C, while Colaba recorded slightly cooler conditions with a maximum of 32.5°C and a minimum of 22°C. The IMD predicts a continuation of clear skies over the next 24 hours, providing some respite from overcast weather, but the rising mercury signals warmer days ahead for Mumbaikars. In terms of air quality, Mumbai remains in the ‘moderate’ category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board’s SAMEER app. As of 9:05 AM, the city’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 154. Borivali recorded an AQI of 168, Mazgaon 162, Kandivali 135, and Malad 172. Colaba, however, registered ‘good’ air quality at 91, while Deonar’s AQI of 278 marked it in the ‘poor’ category. Navi Mumbai and Thane also reported ‘moderate’ AQIs of 123 and 121, respectively.
The AQI scale categorises air quality from ‘good’ (0-100) to ‘severe’ (400+). As pollution levels in Mumbai rise, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has tightened regulations for construction sites. New guidelines mandate sensor-based air pollution monitoring systems at all construction sites, with ward-level squads ensuring compliance. Immediate action will be taken against violators, especially where pollution levels exceed permissible limits. With warmer days and moderate air quality persisting, residents are urged to remain cautious, especially those with respiratory concerns. The city’s authorities continue to prioritise pollution control, hoping for better air quality in the coming months.
