Mumbai SCLR Link Set To Ease BKC Access

Mumbai’s long-awaited Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extension connecting the Western Express Highway to Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) has entered its final phase of construction, bringing the city closer to a continuous signal-free east-west corridor that could reshape commuter movement and improve access to one of India’s largest commercial districts.The 1.4-kilometre elevated connector, being developed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), is designed to bridge a longstanding gap in Mumbai’s road network by directly linking the Western Express Highway with BKC through the Mumbai University precinct. Once operational, the SCLR extension is expected to reduce travel interruptions caused by multiple traffic junctions while improving connectivity between the western suburbs, eastern suburbs and the city’s key business hub.

Officials associated with the project indicated that finishing works are currently underway after nearly nine years of construction. The corridor, which commenced in October 2017, represents an investment of approximately ₹209.56 crore, including the elevated bridge, Vakola bridge improvements and associated infrastructure works. Transport planners view the project as an important missing link in Mumbai’s evolving mobility network. BKC has emerged as a major financial and commercial destination, accommodating corporate headquarters, financial institutions, convention facilities and government offices. However, road access has struggled to keep pace with rising travel demand, particularly during peak commuting hours. The SCLR extension is expected to redistribute vehicle movement by offering an alternative approach to BKC while easing pressure on several heavily congested corridors including Santacruz, Vakola, Kalina, Kalanagar, Kurla and Chembur. By reducing dependency on signal-controlled intersections, the project may also improve journey time reliability for commuters and commercial traffic moving between the eastern and western parts of Mumbai.

Urban mobility experts note that while new road infrastructure can improve network efficiency, its long-term success depends on integration with public transport systems and effective traffic management. BKC is increasingly becoming a multimodal transport destination through expanding Metro connectivity, suburban rail access and bus services. Supporting these networks with better last-mile road infrastructure can enhance accessibility without encouraging excessive private vehicle dependence. Infrastructure specialists also emphasise that major urban road projects should incorporate climate-resilient engineering, efficient stormwater drainage and pedestrian-friendly design to withstand increasingly intense monsoon events. Such considerations have become essential as Mumbai continues investing in large-scale transport infrastructure while adapting to changing climate conditions.

The completion of the elevated connector will mark another milestone in Mumbai’s broader programme of east-west connectivity projects aimed at reducing bottlenecks across the metropolitan region. As final construction activities progress, commuters and businesses will closely watch how the corridor influences traffic distribution, travel efficiency and accessibility to one of the country’s most significant economic centres.
