The civic decision to halt educational activity reflected the practical risks created when intense rainfall coincides with peak travel periods. Students, staff and families can face hazardous roads, flooded pedestrian routes and unreliable public transport even when rainfall varies sharply between neighbourhoods.
Waterlogging was reported across several parts of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, affecting important roads and commercial areas. The disruption also extended to the Sion-Panvel Highway, where a truck accident near Kharghar added to congestion. Such incidents illustrate the economic cost of extreme weather: delays affect commuters, logistics operators, businesses and emergency services at the same time. More seriously, the rainfall exposed hazards associated with urban maintenance. In Sakinaka, a person died after falling into an uncovered manhole during the downpour. In Chembur, a fallen tree struck a school bus, resulting in the death of a child. For a city as densely developed as Mumbai, the challenge is becoming more complex. Large areas of paved and built-up land limit natural water absorption, while intense rainfall can overwhelm drainage capacity within a short period. Climate-resilient planning therefore requires more than emergency pumping and debris clearance. Regular inspection of drainage covers, tree-risk assessments, protected pedestrian routes and rapid hazard reporting can reduce exposure before a storm reaches its peak.
