Mumbai and neighbouring districts are facing a spell of persistent rain, with the India Meteorological Department issuing a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad as water began collecting in low-lying areas and strong winds were forecast in parts of the North Konkan region.
According to a report by Loksatta, rain continued across Mumbai city and its suburbs from Saturday night, with some areas recording heavy showers and others receiving moderate rainfall. The intensity increased from the early hours, and gusty winds were also reported in some locations.
The yellow alert covers the possibility of stormy rain during the day. The weather department has forecast that rainfall intensity may remain high across the region. Winds in some parts of North Konkan could reach speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour, according to the report.
Water accumulation was reported in low-lying areas near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Several other low-lying parts of Mumbai’s suburbs had also begun experiencing waterlogging. Rain was reported in areas including Bandra, Andheri, Ghatkopar, Mulund, central Mumbai and parts of the western suburbs.
The spell has also affected areas around Mira-Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar. Palghar is expected to receive particularly strong rainfall, with weather observers cited in the report warning that the district could see higher intensity than surrounding areas.
The current spell follows a period of uneven rainfall in the Mumbai region. The city recorded above-average rainfall during July, when a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal influenced weather conditions across Maharashtra. Rainfall weakened from August, creating a deficit, while recent days had been marked by hot and humid conditions.
The yellow alert remains the immediate weather warning for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad, with rainfall intensity and wind conditions expected to be monitored through the day.
