Mumbai Railway Station Mohope On Panvel Karjat Line Officially Renamed Poyanje

The Central Railway (CR) has officially renamed Mohope Railway Station on the Panvel–Karjat suburban line as Poyanje, reflecting local geography and community identity. The station’s new code, PYJE, has been updated across all railway records, signage, public announcements, and passenger information systems, officials confirmed. This marks the second railway station in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to undergo renaming within a week, highlighting an ongoing initiative to align station names with regional identities and developmental priorities.

Mohope and Poyanje are small villages situated along the Panvel–Karjat corridor, which is seeing accelerated development under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-III (MUTP-III). The renaming is intended to simplify navigation for passengers and improve clarity in train operations, particularly as the suburban rail network expands to accommodate rising commuter demand. “Passengers and the public are advised to note the updated station name and code while planning travel,” an official from Central Railway stated. The change is being synchronised across the railway’s digital platforms, mobile applications, and on-site signage to prevent confusion during the transition period.

The renaming also reflects the authorities’ broader commitment to streamlining railway operations in line with sustainable urban transport planning. By standardising station names with local geographic references, rail authorities aim to enhance commuter convenience and integrate stations more effectively into the expanding suburban transport ecosystem. “Ensuring stations are easily identifiable for both daily commuters and visitors is key to improving overall transit efficiency,” an industry expert said. Beyond commuter convenience, the move carries operational and administrative benefits. Updated station codes and records reduce errors in ticketing, scheduling, and emergency response coordination. It also facilitates clearer data tracking for suburban railway planning, helping authorities identify congestion points and optimise services in line with growing passenger volumes across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The Panvel–Karjat line has emerged as a critical link for Mumbai’s suburban network, connecting rapidly developing areas in Raigad and Thane districts. Under MUTP-III, enhanced infrastructure along this corridor aims to reduce travel times, expand capacity, and integrate multi-modal transport options, further aligning with sustainable urban mobility goals. As development continues, authorities emphasise the importance of local engagement, ensuring that name changes respect community identity while supporting broader transport efficiency. The Poyanje station update represents a step towards a more coherent and user-friendly suburban railway network, which forms a backbone of Mumbai’s sustainable city transport strategy.
