The inspection focused on how passengers reach and leave the station, including the proposed foot over bridge and connections to existing pedestrian infrastructure. Civic officials have asked for work on a staircase linked to the existing bridge to be accelerated, while coordination with Western Railway is being pursued to resolve the bridge’s alignment and landing points.
The Prabhadevi pedestrian upgrade matters because station access is often where Mumbai’s public transport journey becomes most difficult. Narrow approaches, informal stopping points, uneven surfaces and competing vehicle movements can create conflicts between pedestrians, taxis and other road users. Locating essential public services close to mass transit could make them easier to reach for workers, residents and passengers, provided access remains convenient for people with disabilities, older citizens and those carrying children or luggage. For Mumbai, the larger test will be whether the intervention creates a genuinely walkable station district rather than simply adding another piece of infrastructure. Clear footpaths, universal accessibility, organised pick-up zones, shade, drainage and safe crossings will determine whether commuters experience a meaningful improvement.
