The Maharashtra government is preparing to extend its women-driven electric rickshaw programme across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), marking a significant shift towards cleaner last-mile mobility while expanding livelihood opportunities for women. The proposed rollout will introduce dedicated Pink Autos on carefully selected feeder corridors connecting residential neighbourhoods with railway stations, Metro corridors and bus terminals, supporting safer and more sustainable urban transport. Transport authorities are working with traffic management agencies to identify routes across Mumbai’s suburbs, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Vasai-Virar and Kalyan-Dombivli. Instead of operating on congested arterial roads, the low-speed electric vehicles are expected to serve internal streets and neighbourhood connectivity corridors where public transport gaps remain most visible.
Urban mobility experts note that improving first and last-mile connectivity remains one of the biggest challenges facing rapidly expanding metropolitan regions. While Mumbai possesses one of India’s largest suburban rail systems, many commuters continue to depend on informal transport options for short journeys between stations and homes. Introducing dedicated Pink Autos could reduce dependence on private vehicles for these trips while supporting cleaner mobility through electric transport. The initiative also reflects a broader economic objective by encouraging women-led entrepreneurship within the public transport sector. Under the scheme, the state has reportedly increased its financial assistance from 20 per cent to 40 per cent of the vehicle cost, making ownership more affordable for eligible beneficiaries. The remaining investment will be financed through institutional lending and beneficiary contributions, lowering entry barriers for women seeking self-employment. Officials involved with the programme have indicated that beneficiaries will receive structured driver training, assistance in obtaining commercial licences and technical support for vehicle maintenance.
Priority is expected to be given to economically disadvantaged women, widows, divorced women and applicants from socially marginalised communities, linking mobility planning with inclusive economic participation. From an environmental perspective, the deployment of electric rickshaws aligns with wider efforts to reduce emissions generated by short-distance urban travel. Each vehicle is expected to operate for approximately 120 kilometres on a single charge, making it suitable for neighbourhood feeder services while contributing to lower local air pollution and reduced dependence on fossil fuel-powered transport. Safety has also emerged as a central component of the proposed network. Every vehicle operating under the programme is expected to be equipped with GPS tracking and additional monitoring features designed to enhance commuter confidence, particularly for women travelling during early morning or evening hours.
Urban planners suggest that the long-term success of the initiative will depend on integrating the service with existing public transport systems rather than treating it as a standalone scheme. Clearly defined routes, reliable charging infrastructure, affordable fares and consistent operational standards will determine whether the expanded Pink Autos network evolves into a scalable model for sustainable metropolitan mobility across the Mumbai region.
