Mumbai Orange Gate Tunnel Nears Next Phase

Construction of the Orange Gate Marine Drive Tunnel has achieved a significant engineering milestone, with excavation exceeding 650 metres since the primary tunnelling phase commenced earlier this year. The progress marks another step in Mumbai’s effort to build an integrated underground transport network designed to ease congestion in the island city while improving connectivity between major transport corridors. The twin-tube project, being executed beneath one of the country’s most densely developed urban landscapes, is regarded as among India’s deepest road tunnels. Engineers are driving the alignment through challenging geological conditions while navigating beneath active suburban railway lines, Metro infrastructure and densely built neighbourhoods, making precision construction essential to minimise disruption above ground.

Main excavation using a slurry shield tunnel boring machine began at the end of February after completion of preparatory works, including equipment calibration, installation of permanent tunnel segments and testing of support systems. Since then, steady progress has taken the Orange Gate Marine Drive Tunnel to approximately 650 metres of completed excavation, demonstrating the effectiveness of mechanised tunnelling in one of India’s most complex metropolitan environments. The wider project comprises twin underground tunnels extending over nearly seven kilometres, with the first tunnel measuring about 3.45 kilometres. At its deepest point, the alignment descends to nearly 52 metres below ground level, requiring sophisticated engineering techniques to safely pass beneath existing railway infrastructure and the operational Metro corridor without interrupting public transport services. Urban mobility specialists believe underground corridors such as this represent an important shift in how land-constrained megacities can expand transport capacity. By relocating through traffic beneath the surface, cities can reduce pressure on congested arterial roads while preserving valuable public space for pedestrians, public transport and green infrastructure. However, experts also note that such investments must remain integrated with broader mobility strategies that prioritise mass transit alongside road infrastructure.

Once completed, the Orange Gate Marine Drive Tunnel is expected to create a direct east-west connection between South Mumbai and strategic transport assets, including the Mumbai Coastal Road and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link. Officials estimate that journeys between Orange Gate and Marine Drive could be reduced to nearly five minutes, improving freight movement from the port region while easing congestion on existing surface routes. Project engineers have highlighted the importance of phased construction since tunnelling began late last year. Following the launch of the tunnel boring machine, initial excavation, permanent ring installation and transition into full-scale excavation were completed over successive stages before the project entered its current construction phase.

Beyond reducing travel times, the tunnel is expected to contribute to lower fuel consumption and reduced vehicle idling by creating a more efficient traffic corridor. Urban planners caution, however, that long-term sustainability gains will depend on ensuring new road infrastructure complements investments in public transport, walking and multimodal connectivity rather than encouraging higher private vehicle dependence.
