Mumbai Multimodal Skywalk Nears Public Launch

Mumbai is set to introduce a new benchmark in integrated urban mobility as the city’s first Multimodal Skywalk equipped with travelators approaches completion at Mahalaxmi. Designed to connect suburban rail, Metro Line 3 and the Monorail through a single pedestrian corridor, the project reflects a growing emphasis on reducing interchange times and encouraging greater use of public transport across India’s financial capital. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has indicated that nearly 90 per cent of the Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project has been completed, with commissioning expected after the remaining construction and system integration works are finalised. Once operational, the facility will create a continuous, weather-protected pedestrian route linking Mahalaxmi railway station, Metro Line 3 and the Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail station.

Urban mobility planners view the Multimodal Skywalk as an important shift from building isolated transport assets towards creating an interconnected public transport ecosystem. Rather than focusing solely on expanding rail infrastructure, the project seeks to address one of the biggest barriers to public transport adoption—difficult and time-consuming transfers between different modes of travel. According to project estimates, commuters could save around 20 minutes while changing between the three transport systems. Improved accessibility is also expected to strengthen Monorail usage by providing more convenient connections from South Mumbai, Worli and adjoining commercial districts. Transport experts note that seamless interchanges are critical for increasing ridership, reducing dependence on private vehicles and improving the overall efficiency of metropolitan transit networks. The engineering execution of the project also demonstrates the complexities of infrastructure delivery in densely built urban environments. Construction was undertaken within one of Mumbai’s most utility-congested corridors, requiring careful relocation of a major stormwater drain while ensuring existing water supply and sewerage pipelines remained operational throughout the works. Traffic movement and major public events, including annual festival processions, were reportedly managed without significant disruption during construction.

Environmental considerations also formed part of the project’s implementation strategy. Officials indicate that construction was completed without removing mature trees, illustrating how transport infrastructure can be delivered with greater sensitivity towards existing urban green assets when engineering solutions are planned in advance. Urban development specialists believe future transport investments will increasingly depend on improving first-mile and last-mile connectivity rather than simply adding new rail corridors. Comfortable pedestrian infrastructure, universal accessibility, travelators and integrated station design are becoming essential components of sustainable urban mobility, particularly in high-density cities where walking forms a significant part of every public transport journey.

As Mumbai continues expanding its metro and suburban rail network, the Multimodal Skywalk is expected to become a model for future interchange hubs across the metropolitan region. Its success will ultimately be measured not only by reduced travel times but also by its ability to encourage more residents to shift from private vehicles to integrated, low-carbon public transport systems that support a more resilient and people-centred urban future.
