Mumbai Moves To Rework Pedestrian Access At Prabhadevi
Mumbai is intensifying work around Prabhadevi railway station to improve how commuters reach and leave one of the city’s busy suburban rail nodes. The civic body is reviewing encroachments, taxi movement, road conditions and pedestrian infrastructure along Balasheth Madurkar Marg, while pushing ahead with a proposed staircase for the existing foot overbridge. The measures highlight a wider challenge: making station access safer beyond the railway premises. The latest inspection forms part of the BMC’s broader Prabhadevi pedestrian safety effort, with senior civic officials examining entry and exit routes around the station and assessing how traffic and walking movements interact. The focus is significant because pedestrian risks often emerge in the short distance between a station gate and the surrounding street network, rather than inside the transport facility itself.
Civic teams have also been directed to address obstructions occupying public movement space. Recent enforcement in the Worli-Prabhadevi area removed unauthorised structures, hawker-related obstructions and food trucks from footpaths and roads. The action covered stretches including Dainik Shivner Marg, Fitwala Marg and Balasheth Madurkar Marg. For commuters, however, clearing footpaths is only one part of the equation. A senior urban transport planner would typically assess the entire journey: whether pavements remain continuous, whether crossings are accessible, whether taxis are organised without blocking walking space and whether station approaches work for older people, children and people with disabilities.
The proposed staircase for the existing foot overbridge could help improve access, but its effectiveness will depend on its location, capacity and connection with surrounding footpaths. Mumbai’s own infrastructure planning documents identify safe pedestrian infrastructure, including foot overbridges, subways and skywalks, as an important component of non-motorised transport. The BMC has reported ongoing projects covering 6.75 kilometres of such infrastructure, with 1.66 kilometres completed across 12 projects. The Prabhadevi pedestrian safety measures also carry a broader urban-planning implication. Well-managed station approaches can encourage more people to complete short trips on foot, reducing pressure on intermediate road journeys and improving the effectiveness of public transport. But enforcement must be accompanied by clear vending arrangements and usable public space so that pedestrian improvements do not simply displace informal economic activity.
The next test will be implementation. Resurfaced roads, organised taxi areas, unobstructed footpaths and accessible station connections need to function as one system. If those elements are delivered together, Prabhadevi could offer a practical model for making Mumbai’s railway neighbourhoods safer, more inclusive and easier to navigate without adding more road capacity.
